How to Properly Store Your Tools So They Last Longer
Quality tools are an investment, and how you store them can make a big difference in how long they last. Keep Your Tools Clean
Whether it's dirt, sawdust, grease, or metal shavings. Over time, debris can trap moisture and lead to rust or corrosion. While this might seem obvious (and frankly it is) keeping it at the top of mind should be your number one priority for tool maintenance.
For power tools, it requires more hands-on maintenance than more manual tools but applies the same principals. In addition to cleaning off drill bits, tips and chassis for the tool, the internal mechanisms of the power tool are a top priority. Make sure vents and moving parts are free of dust to help them perform their best using a dry cleaning tool like compressed air and if that's unavailable a duster should be more than enough. (Note: Make sure you read the warnings on your tools, some may not be able to handle compressed air on their systems)
For the battery life of these tools make sure to make a mental note of current battery lives for all the tools, make sure they’re consistently fully charged and you have another tool to swap to should things go wrong with your project or with the tool itself. However, try not to let the battery for any tools you have die outright, the battery completely dying out can cause it to hold less charge going forward giving you less productivity and prematurely aging your tools.
Store Them Somewhere Dry
Next, moisture is one of the biggest causes of tool damage. Even if your garage or workshop feels dry some tools, especially power tools can be very sensitive to humidity. This compounds if you’re in a region that is prone to rainy weather and high heat, you might be used to that weather but your tools aren’t. The easiest ways to store more basic non-powered tools are by hanging them, which helps reduce exposure as well as helps to maintain a safe environment.
The easiest answer to help with this is to acquire a modular cabinet, many of these types of cabinets are waterproof and made out of metal with some sort of anti-rust powering built directly into the paint or the wax that the product is coated with. An even larger solution to the humidity problem, is to set up your full shed in a quality location. If possible, it’s recommended to keep your sheds in a centralized, secure area. While for some this may not be possible, it’s about hitting these marks as close as one can.
Now there are humidity controlled cabinets whose internal environments can be controlled electronically like dry cabinets, oftentimes cabinets like that are used for extremely sensitive materials like electronics or films for movies and photography and less for tool storage.
